Match the detergent to the machine first. Front-loaders tumble clothes in little water and need a low-foam formula; a top-load product in a front-loader over-foams, rinses poorly and can strain the machine. Then divide the pack by the dose for your load size and water hardness, which gives cost per wash — the only comparison that survives across brands, bottles and refills.
Check the fragrance declaration if anyone in the house reacts to it, and try a new detergent on dark colours first. Packaging is what most often separates two similar detergents, since a large refill and a small bottle are not the same purchase.
